we are
the problem
Globally, menstruation and menstrual hygiene insecurity contribute to school absenteeism of millions of girls and women and increase the likelihood of school dropout. Many adolescent girls stay home from school due to menstrual cramping, deficient menstrual hygiene materials, stigma around menstruation, lack of water and sanitation facilities in schools.
The education gap between boys and girls caused by menstrual factors which stop girls from attending their lessons contributes to the gender inequality seen in regions all around the world such Kumasi, Ghana.

By removing periods as a barrier to education, we want to give girls the same opportunities as boys.

our mission
Akwannya wants to see Kumasi school girls gain menstrual independence.
By attending our workshops, we hope to empower girls and women by enabling them to
(1) learn about menstrual hygiene and
(2) how to make their own sustainable sanitary products.
This way school girls are no longer reliant on menstrual factors stopping them from attending their lessons.

1. Training
Our team based in the UK will train the teachers leading the workshop in Kumasi, over Zoom.
We will create instruction booklets and step-by-step instruction videos. These will be provided to teachers during training and we will print out booklets to distribute in schools.
2. Workshops
Our trained workshop leaders will carry out workshops with girls in government schools. Using our secured funding, we will provide the materials needed for workshops which will teach girls how to make 2-3 of their own reusable pads.
After the workshop, schools will have continued access to all training materials (videos, booklet and pdfs). We will also send them a replenishment of the materials needed for the pads, on a yearly basis.
